Percutane - Clinically Proven to Keep you Moving!
Capsaicin
Capsaicin, the active component in chili peppers, is well-known for its heat and its power to relieve pain. It works by stimulating TRPV1 receptors, which are responsible for sensing heat. When you apply capsaicin to the skin, it creates a warming sensation and gradually reduces pain by depleting the substance P, a neuropeptide involved in transmitting pain signals to the brain.
Capsaicin is particularly effective for managing pain from conditions like arthritis, muscle strains, and joint issues. Research shows that it can significantly reduce pain intensity, and because it is applied topically it does not have the harmful side effects of anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s) which can be detrimental to the gastrointestinal system and other internal organs.
Capsaicin also improves circulation. The heat it generates helps increase blood flow to the affected area, promoting healing and reducing muscle soreness. This makes it an excellent pre-exercise choice for athletes and anyone dealing with muscle or joint discomfort to warm up more effectively and avoid injury.
Aloe Vera
In addition to its well-known soothing, cooling and anti-inflammatory properties, aloe vera is also a powerhouse of penetration. It can penetrate deep into the skin, acting as a transdermal carrier to deliver other active ingredients directly to muscles and joints. This helps target underlying pain and inflammation more effectively.
The cooling effect of aloe vera provides instant relief from skin irritation, while its hydrating properties help repair and rejuvenate the skin. It also contains compounds like polysaccharides and glycoproteins that accelerate the healing process and reduce swelling.
Cera Alba (Beeswax)
Cera alba, also known as beeswax, is a natural ingredient with numerous benefits for pain and inflammation, especially in muscles and joints. Beeswax is rich in vitamin A and has excellent anti-inflammatory properties, making it effective in reducing swelling and pain associated with conditions like arthritis and muscle strains.
When applied topically, beeswax forms a protective barrier on the skin, which helps retain moisture and keep the affected area hydrated. This barrier can enhance the absorption of other active ingredients in pain relief formulations, making them more effective in targeting underlying pain and inflammation.
Beeswax also contains natural compounds that help improve blood circulation, which is crucial for reducing muscle soreness and promoting faster recovery. Its anti-inflammatory effects are due to the presence of various biologically active compounds that help reduce the production of inflammatory markers in the body.
Arctium Lappa Root
Arctium lappa, commonly known as burdock root, is a natural remedy with impressive benefits for pain and inflammation in muscles and joints. Burdock root is packed with antioxidants like quercetin, luteolin, and phenolic acids, which help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, making it effective in managing conditions like arthritis and muscle pain.
Research has shown that burdock root can significantly decrease inflammatory markers in the body. It works by inhibiting the activity of enzymes involved in the inflammatory process, providing relief from pain and swelling. This makes it a valuable natural option for those suffering from chronic inflammatory conditions.
Additionally, burdock root has detoxifying properties that help remove toxins from the blood, further reducing inflammation and promoting overall joint and muscle health. Its analgesic effects also contribute to pain relief, making it a comprehensive solution for discomfort caused by inflammation.
Hydrogenated Olive Oil
Hydrogenated olive oil is a scientifically-backed natural ingredient for alleviating pain and inflammation in muscles and joints. This form of olive oil is rich in oleic acid, which has been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory properties. Research indicates that oleic acid can inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines, helping to reduce pain and swelling associated with conditions like arthritis and muscle soreness.
Hydrogenated olive oil also contains a high concentration of antioxidants, such as
polyphenols and vitamin E, which help combat oxidative stress and promote healing in inflamed tissues. These antioxidants play a crucial role in protecting cells from damage and reducing inflammation at the source.
Hydrogenated olive oil is also an excellent emollient, providing a protective barrier that locks in moisture and enhances the absorption of other active ingredients in pain relief formulations. This makes it highly effective in delivering therapeutic compounds deeper into the skin, directly targeting the underlying causes of pain and inflammation.
Arnica Montana
Arnica montana, a yellow flower from mountainous regions, is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. For centuries, it has been used by various civilizations, from ancient European communities to Native American tribes, for its healing benefits. Research shows that its active compounds, such as sesquiterpene lactones, help reduce muscle and joint pain by inhibiting inflammatory cytokines.
This extract is particularly effective in speeding up the recovery of soft tissue injuries like bruises, sprains, and strains by promoting blood flow and reducing inflammation. For athletes, arnica aids in post-exercise recovery, alleviating muscle soreness and speeding up recovery.
Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil
Mentha piperita oil, commonly known as peppermint oil, is celebrated for its potent
therapeutic properties, making it a popular choice for alleviating muscle and joint discomfort. Rich in menthol, this essential oil provides a cooling sensation that soothes sore muscles and reduces inflammation, offering immediate relief from pain and stiffness.
Peppermint oil is highly effective for soft tissue recovery. It's anti-inflammatory and
analgesic effects help to accelerate the healing process for injuries such as sprains, strains, and bruises. By enhancing blood circulation, Mentha piperita oil promotes faster recovery, ensuring that your body can bounce back quickly from physical stress and trauma.
Athletes and active individuals particularly benefit from the use of peppermint oil in their recovery routines. Applied after strenuous exercise, it helps to reduce muscle soreness and prevent stiffness, allowing for quicker returns to peak performance. Scientific studies have supported these benefits, highlighting peppermint oil's role in improving muscle function and reducing pain, making it an essential addition to any natural pain relief regimen.

- Should I use Percutane or Traumitane?
Generally speaking you can think of Percutane as heat therapy (like Deep Heat, but more effective!) Use Percutane for chronic (long term) issues relating to muscle aches and joint stiffness. Percutane will increase circulation to warm up and activate sore and aching muscles and joints to help get you moving. Percutane is ideal for use before exercise.
Traumitane is ideal for use as a first response for acute injuries and inflammation. Think of it more like applying ice to an injury to reduce the effects of inflammation (swelling, redness and bruising) relieving discomfort and promoting faster recovery. Traumitane is ideal for post-exercise application to promote faster recovery. Think of Traumitane like Anti-flamme but more effective!
- Will a topical cream actually get through my skin to the underlying muscle, joint or tendon?
Topical creams are very effective at getting directly to the source of the issue as they can be
applied directly to the site in question. Percutane and Traumitane have been specially formulated to penetrate quickly through the dermal layer to ensure the active ingredients are absorbed directly into the affected areas as opposed to sitting on the surface of the skin like many other topical products.
- Which product provides the best relief for Joint Pain and Arthritis?
Percutane is better for pain relief as it contains capsaicin which is scientifically proven to reduce pain by inhibiting 'substance P’, a eurotransmitter that sends signals to the brain.
Capsaicin works by binding to a receptor in the cell wall of neve endings and desensitising the nerves to pain.
Capsaicin creams such as Percutane are an effective treatment for a variety of pain syndromes, from minor muscle or joint aches to those that are very difficult to treat, such as
arthritis and neuropathic pain.
- Does Percutane have the less side effects than NSAIDs?
No - Oral medication such as ibuprofen and other NSAIDs must pass through your digestive tract and circulatory system before they take effect, as opposed to topical cream that directly affects an inflamed area. Oral medication can therefore cause gastric upset in some patients, especially with medication such as ibuprofen. The general effect of oral medication means that these drugs often become less effective over time due to the body’s tendency to compensate for their effects. Pills that contain opiates also pose significant long-term health risks in the long term since they can be addictive and are therefore prone to misuse.
- Are topical creams more effective for pain relief and inflammation than pills and NSAIDs?
Topical medication offers several advantages over oral medications and NSAIDs. Oral and
topical pain medication, or analgesics, both block the effects of chemicals called prostaglandins that allow neurons to transmit pain signals to the brain. The primary difference between these two classes of medication is that oral medication affects the entire body’s sensitivity to pain, while topical medication only relieves pain in a specific area of the body. The localized effect of topical medication is making it a more popular method of pain relief than swallowing pills. These creams deliver their message directly to inflamed tissue
without affecting the body in general. They are more effective than oral medication for treating painful joints that are just below the skin’s surface, especially the knees and elbows and nerves.

- What should I do if I find Percutane too hot?
The superhero ingredient of Percutane is Capsaicin which is a derivative of hot chillies.
Different people react in different ways to chili heat in their food and the same is true of topical absorption. If you find the Percutane heat too warm for you, apply milk to the area with a paper towel. In the same way that drinking a glass of milk reduces the burn in your mouth from a hot curry, the protein in milk (casein) breaks down the capsaicin molecules to reduce the heat on your skin. Note - a hot shower, bath or spa or sauna should be avoided as these situations will reactivate the capsaicin in Percutane, generating more heat.
- Why Should I choose Percutane over Deep Heat and other heat rubs?
1. Deeper, longer lasting heat - Percutane contains capsaicin derived from chillies. Percutane has been formulated to ensure the Capsaicin penetrates through the dermal layer
to deliver a deeper heat to the underlying affected area rather than just sitting on the skin.
2. Scientifically proven pain relief - Capsaicin is scientifically proven to reduce pain by
inhibiting 'substance P’, a neurotransmitter that sends signals to the brain.
3. Mobilisation of stiff joints and sore muscles - application before activity activates joints,
tendons and muscles by increasing blood flow, helping to get you moving, improve training,
speed-up recovery and prevent injury.
4. Longer lasting relief - Percutane continues to reactivate over a 24 hour period meaning
that it works harder for longer.
5. Developed and manufactured in New Zealand-Percutane has been trusted by kiwis for
over 20 years!
- Will it leave a greasy residue on my skin?
Percutane and Traumitane have been formulated to absorb quickly through the skin and do not leave a greasy film on the surface of the skin like other topical treatments tend to.
